Senseless killing of police officer raises many questions
Dear Editor,
The senseless killing of a police officer by a businessman must be condemned. It seems sense has taken leave in our midst.
The use of a firearm raises the question, was any dangerous threat or perceived threat observed or present? Was due diligence on the licensee done before issuing the licence? Was any investigation conducted on the licensee to determine suitability, mental state and otherwise, before the licence was issued? Now a senseless, irrational act has left two families in distress.
This matter of how this person came to be issued a gun licence demands a thorough investigation and answers.
Similarly, the number of drivers on the roadways, who it is perceived, is not fit for purpose and should not be driving or operating a vehicle, also needs addressing.
The statement by the educator and MP select on the killing of the policeman by the businessman circulating on social media, is inflammatory, laced with innuendoes of a certain ilk and must be condemned. The remarks can only fuel an already highly charged situation. Public officials are expected to be more measured in comments and remarks to diffuse rather than inflame and influence a certain narrative. This can lead to undesirable consequences.
