(Kaieteur News) – The Mayor and Town Council (M&TC) of New Amsterdam is gearing up for the much-anticipated Town Day 2025, with an assortment of events in observance of the town’s 134th anniversary.

Customarily, the town day activities, which culminate with its popular street fair, fall mid to late October. This year’s edition, however, will see some notable adjustments to not only the schedule, but the layout of events, organisers have confirmed.

In an update to the citizens of New Amsterdam, Mayor, Wainwright McIntosh conveyed that the town day committee was unable to navigate the unforeseen circumstances. He posited that notwithstanding the setbacks, the celebration will be “one with a difference.”

“As a result of circumstances beyond our control, we were forced to rework our dates coming out of our calendar of activities. This year’s town day celebration is now shifted to the month of November,” the mayor announced.

Though the formal town week will kick off on the weekend of November 22, the committee has coordinated several activities in the lead up.

Town day committee chairman, Deputy Mayor, Kirk Fraser unveiled the official theme, ‘Rooted in nature: our town, our home, clean, green and welcoming’, and summarised the basis for its conceptualisation.

“This year we are placing specific emphasis on the environment, because we know that in the advent of climate change, we have to ensure that our environment is taken care of. So, our theme this year is the foundation of care for our environment.”

On September 26, citizens participated in the first ever food festival, which crowned New Amsterdam Secondary School as its inaugural champion. The festival had commendable participation, and was deemed a massive success. Riding on this positive momentum, Fraser announced that it will now feature as part of town week in the future. In the run up to town week, other events laid out by the deputy mayor are:

October 19 – Barbecue, Stanleytown

October 22 – Essay-writing Competition for Grade Six students at the New Amsterdam Town Hall

October 24 – All White Party, Leisure Inn

November 8 – Mayor’s Cup Inter-ward Football Competition

November 13 & 14 – STEM Competition for Secondary Schools

November 15 – ‘Big People Party’ In the Gap, Stanleytown

November 21 – Street Exhibition

November 21 – All Black Party, New Amsterdam Stelling Road

November 22 – Street Fair, Main Street of New Amsterdam

November 28 – Basketball Competition, New Amsterdam Basketball Court

On November 29, the curtains on this year’s celebration close with an exotic ‘Blue and Anything’ party.

The variety of activities aligns with the committee’s aim to blend culture, education, sport and entertainment.

Mayor McIntosh disclosed that it was former mayor, Errol Alphonso who back in 1994, birthed the concept of town day celebration. This unique commemoration of Guyana’s oldest town has been maintained along generations of mayors of the municipality, and is well-positioned as one of the premier annual occasions within Region Six. It serves as a stimulus for the town’s economy, and pulls together citizens of every background in a very festive aura.

“This town day became an annual feature, where we as a municipality, engage both the private and public sector, citizens at large. We engage these individuals, these companies, entities to be a part of our celebrations as a town,” the mayor affirmed.
