No teacher transferred from BV Primary or penalised – Education Ministry
(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Education on Saturday stated that no teacher from the Beterverwagting (BV) Primary School has been transferred or penalised following the concerns raised about the pigeon infestation at the learning institution.
In a statement, the ministry noted that no such transfer has been under consideration by the Ministry or the Teaching Service Commission (TSC).
“At no time has any directive been issued by the Ministry to relocate or penalise a teacher for voicing workplace concerns regarding conditions at their school,” the ministry stated.
According to the ministry, it recognises and respects the rights of teachers to draw attention to concerns about school infrastructure, noting that they remain committed to addressing any genuine reported issues of maintenance.
“The Ministry will continue to follow established protocols for any staffing changes, which are conducted in accordance with national policies, collective agreements and labour laws. The Ministry of Education urges all stakeholders to practice the responsible dissemination of data, ensuring accuracy, confidentiality, and ethical use,” they agency said in its statement.
Kaieteur News reported that in a public statement on Tuesday, the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) party said it was informed that the pigeon infestation in the classroom and around the compound was severe.
“The build-up of droppings and nesting debris makes the classroom unsanitary. Pigeon waste exposes students and teachers to harmful bacteria and allergens daily,” WIN stated. The party even published images of ill students lying on chairs joined together in a classroom.
WIN’s publication was then later confirmed by parents and teachers who spoke with the media further highlighting the issue which has been ongoing for a while.
On Thursday, Kaieteur News reported that a teacher who spoke to the press about the infestation was removed from the school on Wednesday with immediate effect. A senior education official told this newspaper that an allegation made against the female teacher led to her being removed.
