(Kaieteur News) – President Irfaan Ali said the new terminal two that will be constructed at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA), Timehri, is likely to be expanded.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony of the SOMA Hotel and Restaurant at Houston on Saturday, Ali said the expansion will cater for the growing passenger traffic.
“When I spoke about the building of the second terminal at the airport, someone said, ‘Who will use it?’ So, we’ll build it when traffic increase then… And already the study that just came back said to me that maybe we have to look at expanding that terminal two with what they’re projecting,” he said on Saturday.
Not only is this a second terminal, the President noted that persons will be walking through the embodiment of Guyana. “When you walk through terminal two, you’ll be thinking about the Amazon, about biodiversity, you’ll be seeing it, you’ll be feeling it, you’ll be hearing it. People will come just to walk through terminal two just as people in transit in some countries just to pass through the airport, because these are the first impression that tells the story of our country,” he related.
President Ali turned the sod for the new terminal back in August. Construction will be done by BHM Construction Inc. out of the United Kingdom (UK) in collaboration with the largest airport group known for world class operations within the global aviation sector, Manchester Airport Group Ltd.
The 18-month project will begin in 2026, and will serve as the new arrival terminal and will promote Guyana’s biodiversity and cultural identity. Terminal 2 will feature business lounges, expanded concessions, and facilities to handle the increasing global demand.
Government had set aside some $7 billion towards this project in the 2025 national budget. Senior Minister with the responsibility for Finance, Dr. Ashni Singh had said that with the increase in international passenger traffic, government will be investing in the development of a new world class terminal effectively increasing the capacity and efficiency of the CJIA.
“The new 150,000 square foot terminal building will showcase Guyana’s natural beauty, and will allow for additional duty-free zones, retail opportunities, rental offices and lounges. The CJIA will then be able to dedicate separate buildings for arrivals and departures, increasing capacity and efficiency.”

Don’t forget to add a few fast food joints, pizza joints, DDL shops to sell our
Liquor. And a Gold Dispenser for small ingots where travelers can purchase
just like using the coke/pepsi machine. A cook-up/pepper pot outlet would
be nice just like a freshly cooked steak shop too.
Just remember, you are building an airline terminal for the future, think 30-40
years before ” an extension” is warranted.
