(Kaieteur News) – A massive four-day anti-narcotics operation by the Guyana Police Force (GPF) in the Upper Berbice River has left a trail of destruction for drug cultivators — with three large ganja farms wiped out, a boat, two outboard engines, firearms and ammunition, and several cellphones seized.
The intense eradication exercise, conducted between Friday, October 3 and Monday, October 6, 2025, targeted remote locations in the Ebini Savannahs and Wiruni areas.
According to police reports, ranks uncovered a three-acre marijuana farm with plants ranging between three and six feet tall, along with a 20×20-foot makeshift camp. Both the camp and plants were set ablaze.
Using drone surveillance, officers later located a second six-acre plot, already cleared and prepared for cultivation. Nearby, they discovered four nursery beds containing some 5,000 cannabis seedlings, a 30×20-foot camp, a 12-gauge double-barrel shotgun, a Stihl chainsaw, a Samsung cellphone, and roughly 34 pounds of dried cannabis, the police said.
Police said the items, including the firearm, were lodged at the Kwakwani Police Station, while the camp with an estimated street value of over $5 million was destroyed by fire.
No arrests were made, but acting on further intelligence, the ranks uncovered 30 pounds of cannabis hidden inside an abandoned church building at Ebini.
The operation then shifted to Wiruni, where officers discovered a two-storey wooden house containing 90 pounds of cannabis, which was photographed and burned on-site. A .32 pistol with an empty magazine and two cellphones were also found and lodged at the Kwakwani Police Station.
In another Wiruni search, police unearthed three 20-gauge shotgun cartridges inside a one-storey 15×10-foot house, as well as several cannabis plants growing under a black tarpaulin nearby. The plants were photographed and destroyed, and a 15HP Yamaha outboard engine was seized.
Ranks later found a third ganja farm spanning three acres, with two seed beds containing about 3,000 seedlings and a 15×20-foot camp equipped with an agriculture mower. The farm and equipment were burned, while a 50HP engine and wooden boat were seized and taken to the Kwakwani Police Station.
Police said the four-day operation was part of an ongoing effort to stamp out large-scale marijuana cultivation in remote riverine communities. While no arrests were made, investigators are said to be following several leads.
