(Kaieteur News) – A bandit was brutally beaten on Sunday, while his accomplice managed to escape with a food vendor’s gold chain at Bent Street, Georgetown.
Police said that the two bandits were on a Honda XR motorcycle when they pulled up in front of the food vendor’s stall around 11:50hrs.
The victim was in front of the stall at the time. According to reports, the pillion rider got off the bike and pointed a gun at the victim, ordering him not to move and demanded that the man hand over all his belongings.
Afraid of being shot, the food vendor reached for his $200,000 gold chain which was around his neck and handed it to the suspect.
As the suspect stretched out his hands to grab the chain, the victim held onto him and a scuffle began.
The bandit reportedly fired two shots but the gun fell from his hand. Seeing that he was unarmed, residents close by rushed to the vendor’s assistance and gave the bandit a brutal beating.
Meanwhile his accomplice, the rider of the bike rode away from the scene, leaving his partner at the mercy of the angry crowd.
It is believed that he might have escaped with the gold chain during the chaos, since police did not recover it from pillion rider after the crowd handed him over to them.
Police, however, recovered the gun and spent shells from the scene before taking the badly beaten bandit to the hospital where he is receiving treatment for head and body injuries under police guard.
He reportedly refused to give police and health officials his name.
Investigations are ongoing.
