Kaieteur News – The Alliance For Change (AFC) has given its members the go ahead to assist parliamentarians and regional councillors from the We Invest in Nationhood (WIN) and the People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) who have reached out for mentorship.
This was revealed on Friday by former party leader, Khemraj Ramjattan and interim leader and chair, David Patterson.
Patterson told reporters that several persons have reached out to him for guidance. While he chose to withhold the names of those persons, he revealed that persons, especially at the regional level have reached out to members of the National Executive Committee (NEC) for help.
“…several of our members have reported since the very first NEC meeting, that they have been contacted primarily by members of WIN who are first time regional councillors and the party, this is at the meeting on the September the 17th, has given them the go ahead to meet and assist in any way possible,” he said.
Patterson reasoned that the AFC is looking to have effective opposition representation and he believes that this is across the board. “But I know for sure… though, in what I wouldn’t call the regions, because you could probably narrow down the persons individually, but in at least four regions, we have actually held meetings, including right in the same building, with members from that party (WIN) to give them… because they’ll be going into to the regional council for the first time, to lend whatever experience that we would have gained over our time in the regional councils.”
Former leader Khemraj Ramjattan told reporters that, “let me just say those seeking mentorship also includes some PPP parliamentarians.”
He added that the AFC is now hearing from a lot of people including international and local organisations, and its general membership which, he reminded, has stayed the course over 20 years.
Admitting that the party performed poorly at this year’s elections, Ramjattan said the AFC will have to incorporate youths who have been with the party. “…and of course, you will need the mentorship to come from somewhere, and it is indeed in that context that I made the statement…And quite frankly, if I may say this, even those who are parliamentarians now have been asking for mentorship from at least myself at a personal level, and in relation to so many others that are senior leaders of our party, I’m certain they too will be asking for mentorship at that level.”
