(Kaieteur News) – The Ministry of Public Works has issued a request for bids for a contractor to rehabilitate and upgrade the Mahaica to Abary Bridge Road Corridor on the East Coast of Demerara.
The tender notice which was published on the government’s procurement opportunities website, states that Guyana has received financing from the World Bank toward the cost of the Integrated Transport Corridors Project (ITCP) and intends to apply part of the proceeds toward payments under the contract for the Improvement (Rehabilitation and Upgrade) of the Selected Regional Road Corridor -Reconstruction of Existing Road Network on the East Coast Demerara – Lot 1: Mahaica Bridge to Abary Bridge Road Corridor (Km. 0+00 – Km. 27+10).
The ministry in its notice said that it is inviting bids from eligible bidders to undertake the construction of 27.1 kilometers of asphalt concrete road, along the Upper East Coast Demerara corridor in Guyana, extending from Mahaica River Bridge to Abary River Bridge.
According to the document, the works comprise a dual carriageway facility consisting of two lanes in each direction, separated carriageways, and paved shoulders 1.0 m to 1.5 m wide.
“The works include, but are not limited to, the improvement (rehabilitation and upgrade) of approx. 27 km of roadway. The works include the relocation of existing utilities from within the works limit, the construction of 10 No. 10-15m span prestressed precast concrete bridges, 750m precast box culverts, 20,120m in-stu concrete drains, 17,040m earthen drains, the installation of road furniture and traffic safety facilities as part of road safety improvements, and other ancillary works as specified in the contract documents,” the ministry explained.
Among other details, the public works stated that the contract is expected to be completed within a period of 36 calendar months from the commencement date.
Bids for this project are expected to open on 2nd October, 2026(Friday) at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office.
Kaieteur News had reported that the reconstruction of Existing Road Network on the East Coast Demerara comprises (Lot1) the improvement of approximately 27 kilometers of roadway and associated roadway structures and (Lot 2)the extension/construction of the three (3) main bridges, namely the Mahaica River, Mahaicony River and Abary River Bridges.
Back in October 2025, the Department of Public Information reported that the government signed a US$156 million loan agreement with the World Bank toward the Integrated Transport Corridors Project (ITCP).
According to the article, the project was approved in early 2025 by the World Bank and is geared toward supporting Guyana in its quest to upgrade and rehabilitate the country’s road infrastructure, and will focus on enhancing the country’s transport network in selected regions in order to allow for better equipped infrastructure that could withstand natural hazards while providing safer and more reliable movement for persons.
In July 2026, this publication reported that Minister of Public Works Juan Edghill and his team met with residents, business owners, religious leaders, motorists, and other stakeholders to discuss the planned reconstruction of the ECD road corridor between the Mahaica and Abary bridges.
Held at the Mahaicony Technical and Vocational Training Centre, the consultation covered the project’s design and scope, environmental and social impacts, and the grievance redress mechanism available to affected residents.
The ministry reported at the time, that the four-lane highway is designed for a 20-year lifespan and will be built in three lots, with initial rehabilitative work starting on Lots 1 and 2. The upgrade will include widened lanes with a median, street lighting, raised crosswalks, pedestrian and cattle-crossing signage, rumble strips, and improved junctions. Residents raised concerns about land acquisition, drainage, and the fate of historic railway structures along the route. A project consultant said options for preserving the structures — some considered monuments — are being explored and that they will not be discarded outright. Edghill added that any drainage changes will require sign-off from a hydrologic engineer at the National Drainage and Irrigation Authority, noting similar concerns have been resolved on other projects nationwide.
On land acquisition, Edghill said affected owners will be paid fair market compensation, as required by the constitution, and would not be left at a disadvantage.
