WCB man killed after struck by lorry
(Kaieteur News) – A Saturday morning road accident at No. 5 Village, West Coast Berbice, has claimed the life of a 30-year-old man of the community.
Steve McAlmont, of Lot 10, No. 5 Village, was killed after he was struck by a motor lorry, police confirmed.
The incident occurred at about 11:30 hours between the No. 5 and No. 4 bridges, West Coast Berbice, and involved McAlmont and motor lorry GAR 4204, owned by Nisha Dean-Bacchus of Lot 33, Gay Park, East Bank Berbice.

The lorry was being driven by 27-year-old Joseph Wilson of Lot 69, Glasgow Village, East Bank Berbice.
Police enquiries revealed that the lorry was proceeding east along the No. 5 Public Road at about 50 kilometres per hour when McAlmont ran from north to south onto the bridge connecting No. 5 and No. 4 Villages, into the path of the lorry, resulting in a collision.
McAlmont’s brother, Tony Khan, told reporters that he was working in Georgetown when he received a call from relatives and neighbours informing him that his brother had been involved in an accident and had died.
“So far, I get to understand that my brother went and shop, and when he come out from the shop, he stand up near to the road corner with an umbrella cover, and he mek a one step with he foot, and shortly after they said they hear a blam. By time they look, they see the body on the ground,” Khan recounted.
According to police, McAlmont was dragged for approximately 40 feet from the point of impact into No. 4 Village. He was picked up in an unconscious condition by public-spirited citizens and taken to the Bath Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Khan said his brother suffered severe injuries. He noted that both of McAlmont’s feet were broken and had major lacerations, while his back was “scrape out.”
Khan said he was informed that the lorry driver is currently in police custody.
He disclosed that McAlmont had previously served in the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) before working in construction. He was living with his father up to the time of his death.
“We’re hurt about it, but it is what it is,” Khan said.
