Dear Editor,
The recent acts of bullying within our schools in Guyana are deeply troubling and must no longer be ignored. Bullying is not just “children being children” — it is a destructive practice that causes lasting emotional, psychological, and sometimes physical harm to our young people.
When bullying becomes normalized in the school system, it undermines the very purpose of education, which is to nurture safe spaces for growth, learning, and character development.
As a society, we cannot stand idly by. Stronger measures are urgently needed to punish and deter bullying. Possible strategies include:
Implementing clear and enforceable penalties for students who engage in bullying.
Establishing strict anti-bullying policies across all schools, with teachers and administrators trained to identify and act swiftly.
Requiring mandatory parental involvement whenever a case arises, ensuring accountability begins at home.
Providing counseling and rehabilitation programs not only for victims, but also for bullies, who often act out due to unresolved issues.
Setting up student hotlines and anonymous reporting systems so that no child feels unsafe in speaking out.
We also call on our newly appointed Minister of Education to take immediate and decisive action. This is the perfect moment for leadership to stomp out bullying and to set a precedent that Guyana’s schools will be places of safety, discipline, and respect.
If we fail to act now, we risk raising a generation scarred by violence and fear. But if we face this issue with urgency and resolve, we can build a school system where every child feels valued and protected.
Yours faithfully,
Atika Stephens
