Kaieteur Sports – Former Guyana youth player Fazil Gani hit an impressive 52 to help an Ontario Round-Arm Softball Cricket Association (ORSCA) Avengers beat Assassin by 14 runs in the inaugural final on Saturday at Hanover Public School ground, Brampton.
The right-handed batter Gani struck three sixes and four fours as Avengers tallied up a competitive 137-6 from the allotted 15-overs.
Assassin responded with 123 all out in 14.2 overs with Gani picking up a wicket as well to crown a fine all-round performance. Assassin had won the toss but decided to bowl first.
Gani occupied the crease for 37 balls and also shared an outstanding, 68-run second-wicket stand with opener Navin Latchman who scored a superb 43.
They two came together after Imtiaz Abjal (19) departed with 29 runs on the board.
Veteran left-arm bowler Mark Nazir grabbed two wickets for 15 runs from his maximum three overs for Assassin and Muniram Karan also accounted for two victims but he conceded 26 runs in his three-over stint.
Assassin began their chase badly after former Guyana first-class Captain Damodar Daesrath was out for 5 at 6-1 and then soon after Yadram “Lara” Bogh only added 1.
Pugnacious opening batsman Kumar Dudnoth scored a fighting 23 and 21 apiece from Azib Alli Hanif and Karan.
Lindon Persaud gave Assassin hopes of overhauling the target with 21 in the latter part of the fixture.
Ricky Sukhai took 2-20 from 2.2 overs while Sanjeev Ramnarine (2-22) and Latchman (2-34) assisted him with the ball.
Gani was named the MVP for his excellent, all-round display. He received a trophy while the team also collected a trophy and $1500 for their winning effort.
The runners-up side was also given a trophy.
The four-team tournament was run by the ORSCA.
