Kaieteur News – The government of Guyana has spent approximately $4B to construct police and fire stations, all of which were commissioned over the last three months, across the country.
During the months of June, July and August, Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn and his team commissioned 26 police stations and five fire stations across Guyana.
In July, four new fire stations were commissioned. They are the Diamond Fire Station ($107.6 million), Leonora Fire Station ($159,270,235), Charity Fire Station ($144.8 million), and the Ogle Fire Station ($128 million). In August, the ministry commissioned the $138 million Wisroc Fire Station in Region 10.
Meanwhile, for the Guyana Police Force (GPF), in June, the minister commissioned the brand-new Regional Division headquarters for Region One valued at $213 million.
Notably in July, the following stations and divisional headquarters were officially opened: Charity Police Station ($62.7 million), Regional Division headquarters at Anna Regina ($215.1 million), San Souci Police Station ($130,756,925), Vreed-en-Hoop Police Station ($118,735,490), Tuschen Police Station ($82,995,706), Den Amstel Police Station ($170,948,990), Regional Police Division headquarters at Diamond ($195.8 million), Providence Police Station ($65.2 million), and the Herstelling/ Farm Police Station ($82.47 million).
The $191,907,925 Kitty Police Station, $112 million Sparendaam Police Station and the $143 million Mahaica Police Station were also commissioned in July.
Meanwhile, in August, the ministry commissioned the Regional Police Division headquarters of Region Seven in Bartica ($225,824,943), Eteringbang Police Station ($140 million), Imbaimadai Police Station ($140 million), Kamarang Police Station ($31,705,852), Regional Division headquarters for Region Six ($228,192,300), Rose Hall Police Station ($70,788,160), Mahaicony Police Station ($111,820,000) and the Timehri Police Station ($125 million).
Additionally, during that month, the $55,632,913 Ruimveldt Police Station, $123,800,0 00 North Ruimveldt Police Station, $99,949,058 Annai Police Station, $35,476,160 Karasabai Police Station and the $171,411,810 Lethem Police Station were commissioned.
Minister Benn, at one of the commissioning ceremonies, said that the government will continue to prioritize investments in smart infrastructure to ensure that law enforcement agencies are equipped with the tools and environment they need to keep communities secure, proactive, and connected.
The Home Affairs Ministry said that the new police stations feature modern amenities designed to enhance operational efficiency and promote community-centered policing. Some of the key features of the stations includes male, female, and juvenile Lockups; a witness and ID parade room; an armory and evidence room; a child-friendly interview area; a dedicated domestic violence interview and waiting area; enquiries section; an Officer-in-Charge (O.C.) Office; a Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Office; Traffic Department Office; and Senior and Junior Ranks’ Living Quarters just to name a few.
Meanwhile, the ministry noted that the establishment of new fire stations is part of a national drive to decentralize emergency services and take life-saving response capabilities closer to citizens throughout Guyana.
