(Kaieteur News) – A 45-year-old gold miner was on Thursday charged with manslaughter and placed on bail in connection with the death of Moses Chappelle, called “Bizo, who was fatally shot at Blackwater Backdam, Region Seven.
Eulex Andre Jeffery, called “Ratty,” of Company Road, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Teriq Mohamed at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court where the charge was read to him. He was also charged with possession of firearm without a license and possession of ammunition without a license, both contrary to Section 16(2)(a) of the Firearm Act, Chapter 16:05.
According to information provided by the police, Jeffery was not required to plead the manslaughter charge and was granted bail in the sum of $600,000.
For the firearm and ammunition charges, he pleaded not guilty, and was granted bail in the sum of $200,000 for the firearm charge and $100,000 for the ammunition charge.
He is expected to return to court on June 8, 2026, for continuation.
Kaieteur News had reported that the incident occurred on April 23, 2026 at Blackwater Backdam around 21:30hrs.
Police in its report said that Chapelle had returned to Blackwater Landing with another man after visiting a mining operation in the backdam. The report said the two were imbibing in the vicinity of a shop.
Reports are that while the men socialized, a loud explosion suspected to be a gunshot was heard. Chapelle reportedly fell to the ground at the shop and blood was observed on his back.
With the assistance of persons at the landing, the injured man was taken to the Puruni Health Centre, where he was pronounced dead on arrival by a medic. Police stated that his body was subsequently examined and a small circular wound was observed in the left lower back area.
Police in Region Seven visited the scene, where bloodstains were seen on the ground, from which samples were collected.
“A 45-year-old gold miner of Company Road, Buxton, East Coast Demerara, was subsequently arrested and placed into custody,” the police revealed.
During the course of its investigation, the police reported that on April 26, while at the backdam area investigators discovered two firearms were recovered, namely an AM-15 rifle and a .32 pistol, along with two magazines containing forty-two (42) live .223 rounds, one magazine containing four (4) live .32 rounds, one 9mm magazine, seventy (70) live .223 rounds and forty-eight (48) live 9mm rounds.
The recovered items were lodged and formed part of the ongoing investigation.
