130 guidance counselors in 97 secondary schools across country – Education Ministry

Kaieteur News – Ensuring students have access to confidential guidance and psychosocial support, the Ministry of Education on Wednesday said there are currently 130 trained counselors serving in 97 out of 117 secondary schools countrywide.
The revelation was made in observance of World Suicide Prevention Day held on September 10.
“The ministry of education joins the global community in observing World Suicide Prevention Day, under the theme “Changing the Narrative on Suicide – Start the Conversation.”
This day serves as a vital reminder of the importance of protecting mental health, building supportive environments, and fostering resilience among our nation’s young people,” the ministry said in its release.
According to the ministry, as part of its ongoing commitment to the well-being of students, it has placed a strong emphasis on school-based counseling support.
With 130 trained counselors serving the 97 schools, the education ministry noted that the Cyril Potter College of Education (CPCE), where trainee teachers attend, also benefit from permanent in-house counseling underscoring the ministry’s recognition of the importance of mental health at both secondary and tertiary levels.
The ministry said it continues to strengthen partnerships with parents, teachers, and community stakeholders to raise awareness about mental health, reduce stigma, and promote help-seeking behaviors.
Additionally, ongoing training and capacity building for teachers and counselors also ensure that early signs of distress can be identified and addressed in a timely manner.
“The ministry of education reaffirms its dedication to nurturing not only academic excellence but also the holistic well-being of every learner. On this World Suicide Prevention Day, we encourage all Guyanese to remember that every conversation, every act of kindness, and every gesture of support can save a life,” the ministry expressed.

In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, the ministry disclosed that counselors from the student support unit in addition to the 130 counselors in the school system through their school support services will be leading awareness sessions in secondary schools nationwide. These sessions, the ministry noted will focus on breaking stigma, building resilience, and letting students know that help is always within reach.
