Kaieteur News – The Peoples Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) is promising to make part-time workers and Community Service Officers (CSOs) permanent staff if elected to serve another term.
This was revealed by Vice President, Bharrat Jagdeo on Thursday at his weekly press conference held at Freedom House, Robb Street, Georgetown.
Jagdeo disclosed that part-time workers have been enquiring whether they will benefit from increases that public servants have been promised, should the PPP/C return to office after Monday’s polls. He said they are considered part of the public service and will cash in on the said benefits.
“So, all public sector workers will see increases in benefits and remuneration. I just want to clarify for them because the workers have been calling people, the CSOs, the part-time workers, they’ve been calling to find out whether they will get increases too and the answer is yes,” he said.
Jagdeo noted that for the part-time workers as well as the CSOs who have been asking to go full-time, “the answer is again yes that we are looking to convert a lot of the part-time workers to full-time employees of the government. There are so many opportunities in the education sector or in the administration of local government or in health care. The hospitals we’re building, we need 6,000 new workers in these hospitals. That would allow us to convert a lot of the people who are working now on a part-time basis into full-time jobs with the benefits there, too,” he explained.
On August 24, Kaieteur News reported that President Irfaan Ali reminded part-time workers that it was his administration that created the 10-day worker initiative which has now employed thousands.
The National Pathway Workers Programme, launched in 2022 by the PPP/C, allows citizens to earn $40,000 monthly for 10 days of work. Government currently invests about $611 million monthly in the programme, which has created employment for some 15,283 persons.
Speaking at a public meeting at Bush Lot, Region Five, President Ali accused the opposition of hypocrisy for first attacking the initiative but now promising on its campaign trail to increase the salary. “Who give y’all the job…now they promise to increase the salary,” he told supporters.
During his address, Ali revisited broken promises made by the former APNU+AFC administration and reminded his supporters of what is at stake in the 2025 elections. He cautioned voters against being swayed by campaign pledges of other parties.
