Kaieteur News – The Alliance for Change (AFC) on Wednesday said it will transform Region 10 into a business hub and establish an international airport, should it win the upcoming general and regional elections.
During a press conference to discuss the party’s plans for the mining town and the region at large, former member of parliament (MP), and AFC candidate Devin Sears, told reporters that party leader Nigel Hughes has always emphasised the need to restore the Linden airstrip.
“The Linden airstrip that we have there is one of the best in Guyana, fully asphalt, one and a half mile long, 90 meters wide. We envision that that can lead as a trans-shipment point for not drugs, trans-shipment point for cargo, not only for Latin America or the southern hemisphere or even the Caribbean, it also can be a place whereby we can set up, such as flower farms and different things in that particular area there.”
AFC said terminals could be established to transform the airstrip into an international airport. “We’re going to make it an international airport, and also with various facilities and amenities which can accommodate our storage. We can have bonds and warehouses here and so forth, and an entire community will be boarded onto that the establishment of that airport. So that is one of the things that is high on our agenda.”
Sears made the commitment that his party will push for better health care services within the region and placed some focus on tourism because of the scenic views.
He explained that during the Covid-19 pandemic the region was heavy on tourism to facilitate social distancing restrictions. Today, persons are still constantly taking weekend trips to the blue lake, the creeks and the numerous springs.
“We want to ensure that we invest a lot, especially in industry. As you are probably aware, Linden is considered to be the bauxite mining town, but we’re slowly moving away from that. We wanted to be a hub for business and major, major investment, by deliberations, one of the things that we’re going to be pushing is the establishment of a silica factory,” he said.
Sears told reporters that Linden has some of the best sands in the world right in Linden, and currently it is mostly being used for construction. However, the AFC believes that having a glass factory in the region will make use of the sand and create “more employment, not only for youths, but the young unemployed.”
