Slingerz FC inches closer to second league title

League leaders will be looking to extend their lead this weekend
Kaieteur Sports – The Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Elite League resumes this weekend at the National Training Centre, Providence, with four crucial fixtures that will shape the final points standings.
At the heart of it all is league leaders Slingerz Football Club, who stand on the cusp of reclaiming their throne as the country’s top side.
The action kicks off today at 6:30 pm when Den Amstel face Monedderlust FC in what promises to be a gritty encounter. Both sides are desperate for points after coming off defeats in their last outings.
Following that clash, the once-mighty but now struggling Fruta Conquerors FC will take on Ann’s Grove United.
All four teams enter the round with losses hanging over them, and with relegation spots looming dangerously near, three points tonight could prove to be a lifeline.
Sunday’s double-header is set to provide even more drama.

Western Tigers, still within striking distance of Slingerz FC, will lock horns with Mainstay Goldstar at 6:30 pm.
The Essequibo-based outfit has endured a torrid campaign, shipping double-digit goals almost every time they’ve taken the field. The Tigers will view this as a must-win fixture to keep their faint title hopes alive.
The marquee matchup follows, with table-toppers Slingerz FC facing fifth-placed Santos FC. A win for the West Demerara giants would extend their unbeaten run and all but seal their second Elite League title.
Slingerz FC’s campaign has been nothing short of spectacular. From 12 matches, they’ve recorded 11 victories and a single draw, the only team yet to taste defeat this season.
Their free-flowing attack has plundered 69 goals, while their watertight defence has conceded just three, giving them a jaw-dropping goal difference of +66. With 34 points, they are comfortably perched at the summit of the table.
Their nearest challengers, Guyana Police Force FC, sit seven points adrift on 27. The lawmen have shown steel at the back, conceding only 11 goals, and remain mathematically in the hunt with eight wins, three draws, and a solitary loss.
Western Tigers also share 27 points but slipped to third after 13 matches, their record of eight wins, three draws, and two defeats not enough to keep pace with Slingerz.
Defending champions Guyana Defence Force FC occupy fourth on 22 points, while Santos FC, who will be eyeing an upset against Slingerz, round out the top five with 16 points.
In the bottom half, Monedderlust (15 points) and Ann’s Grove United (12 points) have shown fight, but inconsistency has cost them dearly.

Den Amstel (11 points) and Fruta Conquerors (8 points) are in the danger zone, flirting with relegation. Mainstay Goldstar, meanwhile, remain rooted to the basement, still pointless after 12 straight losses, while conceding a staggering 126 goals, the worst defensive record in Elite League history.
With just a handful of fixtures remaining, the mathematics may leave room for permutations, but the football tells its own story, Slingerz FC have been untouchable.
Their organisation, thanks to Coach Jamaal Shabazz, ruthlessness in front of goal, and near-perfect defensive line have set a standard that few in Guyana can match.
Barring an extraordinary collapse, the West Demerara powerhouse is set to lift their second GFF Elite League title, something that will underline their resurgence as the country’s undisputed footballing force.
