(Kaieteur News) – With the aim of ensuring that it is compliant with the rules of the International Powerlifting Federation (IPF) and to ensure that the sport in Guyana is on a firm footing from a technical perspective, the Guyana Amateur Powerlifting Federation (GAPLF) is on a path to investing in the technical capacity of officials.

In this regard, the GAPLF, with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, National Sports Commission and the Guyana Olympic Association in the main will see two new coaches being trained to lead the development of powerlifters in Guyana.

Bjorn Williams and Ashley Abraham are attending and IPF Trainer Course Level 2 taking place in Chile from September 17-19; This is the first time that local based coaches are being trained with Abraham being the first female.

Guyana has one IPF trained coach who is Kerma Singh, based in the USA and has been the technical glue for the nation for many years at the international level. The IPF has now made it mandatory that a female coach must be attached to teams competing in their championships once female members are selected.

Other nations that will be participating in this trainer course are Argentina, Brazil, Columbia, Ecuador, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and the host nation.

This course will precede the 2026 South American Powerlifting Championships which will lift off also in Chile from September 20-28 at the Gimnasio Polideportivo Estadio Nacional, Santiago, Chile.

Guyana will be represented by 17 athletes, 10 would be repping the Golden Arrowhead for the first time. Two will be contesting the equipped segment of the competition and 16, the classic category.
