Basil Butcher Trust Fund – $3 Million worth of items shared out

Kaieteur Sports – The late West Indies batting maestro, Basil Butcher was a huge fan and supporter of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, MS. The elegant middle order batsman and part time leg spinner was not only an honorary member but was actively involved in supporting the club’s activities until he became ill. The RHTYSC has honoured his memory since his death in December 2019 by hosting the annual tribute to Basil Butcher Memorial Trust Fund. Under the sixth annual Basil Butcher Trust Fund, the Rose Hall Town Namilco Thunderbolt Flour Under 23 and first division team distributed over $3 million worth of items to youths, churches and organisations.

The Trust Fund shared out $1.6 million worth of prizes to the outstanding awardees of the club. A total of fifteen outstanding cricketers from the Bakewell/Busta 2025 cricket academy and twelve awardees of the Republic Bank Grade Six Summer camp received attractive packages of gifts with the top student receiving $300,000 worth of prizes each.

The prizes at both programmes included E-Bike, bicycles, electronic tablets, kitchen utensils, gold medallion, household items, designer clothing and watches, cellphones, food hampers, cosmetics and educational hampers. Over one hundred attendees from both programmes received an educational package and a food hamper worth $8,000 each, while a large amount of cricket gear, including cricket bats, batting pads, batting gloves, cricket balls, cricket uniforms, wicketkeeping gloves/pads, helmets were also shared out.

The Rose Hall Town Namilco teams also assisted numerous schools with trophies, medals and special prizes for their graduation ceremonies. Among the schools who benefitted were the Rose Hall Town Nursery, Port Mourant Secondary, Rose Hall Town Primary, Lower Corentyne Secondary and the Day Care Centre in Port Mourant. Several churches also benefited with assistance for the vacation Bible studies programme. The St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Youth club received a special package of items including a $35,000 bicycle for its VBS. The construction of internal fence around the Area H ground concrete pitch was also done under the Butcher Trust Fund.

Club Secretary Hilbert Foster stated that the RHTYSC was very pleased to honour the late Butcher as he was a towering figure to every member of the RHTYSC from its formation in 1990 to his death in 2019. Butcher he noted, sponsored a cricket development programme to assist youths with cricket gear. Among those to benefit were West Indies players Shimron Hetmyer and Assad Fudadin.

Butcher also organized former West Indies captain Deryck Murray to visit the club for one week on a working visit in 2008. The former West Indies batting star who played 44 test matches scoring 3104 runs at an impressive average of 43.33 also assisted by hosting dozens of educational sessions with members of the club. Among the players who benefitted from his wisdom were Esan and Royston Crandon, Khemraj Mahadeo, Delbert Hicks, Abdel and Assad Fudadin, Shaun Grant, Neil Williams, Shemaine Campbelle, Erva Giddings and Dominic Rikhi.

The Captain of the Namilco Thunderbolt Flour First Division team stated that his team was pleased to be associated with honoring the memory of one of Guyana’s best cricketers and would continue to do so in the future. The Namilco team is currently considered the leading first division team in Berbice and has dominated the level for over a decade. Players in the team include test players Kevin Sinclair and Kevlon Anderson along with Pestano, Eon Hooper, Javed Karim, Matthew Pottaya, Romesh Bharrat, Junior Sinclair, Sylus Tyndall, Keith Simpson, Jonathan Rampersaud, Jeremy Sandia among others.
