Kaieteur News – Every government in Guyana come in wid big talk ‘bout how dem gon deal wid crime. One say “zero tolerance,” next one say “community policing,” another one promise “modern crime-fighting.” After all dat, crime still deh here like pepper in a metemgee — yuh cyan tek it out.
These days is not only people tiefin’ from people. Now dem tiefin’ from animals too. Back in de day, if yuh cow, sheep or goat miss, you coulda look in de next pasture or knock pon de neighbour gate. Now? Yuh got to check de Sunday lunch pot before yuh check de fence.
But the latest thing shock dem boys — tiefin’ dogs. Not no lil poodle alone, but pitbull, Rottweiler, and even dem street dogs wid half a tail. Soon as yuh gate swing open by mistake, that dog gone like a PPP promise. And when yuh ask ‘bout it, some boldface gon tell yuh, “Finders keepers.” Is like dem get a law degree from Thief University.
What funny is how some of these dogs tek to de new owners like they been waiting all dem life for that upgrade. The same dog that use to bark till yuh ears ring when a stranger pass, now licking up the new thief-owner like is long-lost family. One man tell dem boys he nearly cry when he see he own dog riding in the front seat of the tief man car, head out the window, looking happier than when it did live at he home.
And de worst part? Police does treat it like is a joke. Try telling dem your dog missing — dem gon ask if the dog had a passport and a photograph for identification.
Dem boys seh the way this crime thing going, next thing people gon start tiefin’ is your shadow if yuh stand in the sun too long. Until then, lock yuh gate, hug yuh dog, and remember — in Guyana, everybody need security… even de animals.
Talk half. Leff half.
