Kaieteur News – Despite the People’s Progressive Party/Civic (PPP/C) pulling its largest crowd ever at a recent rally in Linden, Region 10, A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) presidential candidate Aubrey Norton, has dismissed the turnout, promising that it will not translate into votes for the incumbent.
Last Sunday night, PPP General Secretary Bharrat Jagdeo called on supporters in Region 10 to take the party’s message directly into their homes and communities if they want to see change in the traditional opposition-stronghold.
At a press conference on Friday, Norton claimed the PPP brought supporters from other regions to the rally to create the impression of strong support in Linden. “If you go back, you would recognise that for every election, the PPP ships in plenty people into Linden to create the perception that they have support in Linden but all the elections, after they finish shipping these people and posting these pictures. They get a licking in Linden, and it will be no different this time,” Norton stated.
Jagdeo admitted that his party has never secured the region at the regional level but stressed that change is possible. He emphasised that winning the region will require grassroots efforts, not wishful thinking, and urged attendees to distribute flyers outlining the PPP’s achievements over the last five years and speak “to those being misled.”
The PPP GS said, “We are not going to win this region by magic. We’d only win it if people become conscious of the task ahead and I’m relying on every single one of you to carry that message back to your homes and to your neighbourhood.”
To further prove why the PPP will not change the support base after the September 1 elections, Norton said Lindeners believe the PPP dislikes the township.
Moreover, Norton also addressed former People’s National Congress Reform (PNCR) executive member and opposition Member of Parliament (MP), Jermaine Figueira who in his address in his hometown, underscored that since he joined the PPP, he has felt welcomed and respected.
Figueira told the crowd, “Never before in the history of Linden and Region 10 have we seen and experienced such rapid transformation happen simultaneously.” He said he has witnessed the massive development across Linden and encouraged supporters to vote for the PPP in order for the development to continue.
For his part, Norton said Figueira’s position rings hollow. He highlighted that while serving as Shadow Minister for the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport, Figueira remained silent and allowed the PPP government to “destroy” several grounds in Linden, affecting sports in the region. “Never said a word, and then he goes to the PPP and suddenly finding everything to be nice. But we know, we know him very well. The first question he asks is, what is in it for me, never asked about the people,” Norton declared.
