Dear Editor,
Kaieteur News – The recent incident at Raghoo’s Bar, where a woman was publicly humiliated and physically violated, is deeply troubling and as such exposes the urgent need for societal change.
The fact that this disturbing act was not only carried out but brazenly recorded by multiple bystanders—including other women and a disc jockey who shamefully encouraged the act—should alarm every Guyanese citizen.
It is disheartening to witness a culture where such inhumanity is met with amusement or apathy rather than swift intervention. Our society must reflect on what we have become: when filming and sharing cruelty takes precedence over protecting a fellow human being. As women, as citizens, and as human beings, we must hold ourselves to a higher standard.
The role of the law in this matter cannot be overstated. Justice must not be delayed. Those responsible—both the direct perpetrators and those who actively abetted the attack—must be apprehended and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. There is no place in our communities for such lawlessness and moral decay.
Equally important is the message this sends to women and young girls across Guyana. We must be more vigilant. We must be more united. And we must continue to call out and confront behavior that endangers or disrespects women in any setting—public or private.
Let this incident not fade as another fleeting viral video, but be the wake-up call we all need. As a people, we must do better. Our silence or inaction only empowers those who choose to harm.
Sincerely,
Atika Stephens
