Kaieteur News – A 40-year-old vendor was on Friday remanded to prison on Friday for being in possession of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The accused Charles Rawlins of Lot 15 Ketley Street, Georgetown, appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Faith McGusty at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Rawlins pleaded not guilty to the charge which alleged that on July 17, 2025 at Water Street, Stabroek Market, Georgetown, he had in his possession 98.4 grams of cannabis for the purpose of trafficking.
The defense was led by attorney Clevaun Humphrey who told the court that his client denied the allegation and that the narcotics was not found in his clients’ possession but at the back of the market where persons were traversing.
Humphrey told the court that his client was previously charged for robbery but that charge is in no way connected to the current offence.
The lawyer assured the court that his client is not a flight risk and requested reasonable bail.
Meanwhile, the prosecution objected to bail stating that the arrest was captured on video and the cannabis was in the defendant’s hand. The prosecution committed to providing the video evidence at the next court date.
Further, the state told the court that when Rawlins was questioned by police, he showed them a small parcel containing the narcotics.
He was denied bail and the matter was adjourned to August 22, 2025.
