(Kaieteur News) – Hundreds of persons poured into the University of Guyana Berbice Campus (UGBC) on Monday at Tain, Corentyne, for the annual Open Day and Job Fair, themed “Innovation. Opportunity. Impact.”
The event drew strong attendance by students and young professionals, as well as those seeking employment.
Vice-chancellor of the University of Guyana (UG), Professor Paloma Mohamed-Martin, in her feature address, noted that the event is in harmony with tradition, even as she lauded it as the biggest turnout. She also invited individuals to make good on the afforded opportunities.
“This morning we’ll also see not only persons who are here to look at the external exhibits we have, because persons are looking for employees, for people to hire, but they are also looking for persons who they can work with as interns, to give opportunities too,” she stated at the opening ceremony.
Dr. Mohamed-Martin disclosed that the institution has crossed its 1000th students mark in its 25-year history. She encouraged students to carefully consider the path they want to explore before leaving high school. The university, she suggested, is a practical way for launching careers through its broad programme base. In that regard, she charged them to apply it to align themselves along with the country’s development trajectory.
“We have been very excited by what the prospects of this part of the country, and the whole country, is seeing- a very significant dynamic of growth and development…. this Berbice we knew was going to be a very significant player in the development of our country,” she affirmed.
On the sidelines of the event, the vice-chancellor told Kaieteur News that Monday’s activity was coordinated on three vital objectives: to highlight programmes being offered by the Berbice extension of the university for students seeking to pursue tertiary studies; to spotlight current and future national development in the context of Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), and to also provide career proposals and job opportunities.
Those stated objectives were met through the placement of several booths arranged by many of the event sponsors, including the Ministry of Natural Resources, the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Labor and Manpower Planning, Republic Bank, Demerara Bank, Halliburton, SBM Offshore, Eldorado Offshore, ExxonMobil Guyana, AGM, Nand Persaud and Company Limited, and other entities.
Young professionals in particular flocked the job fair to pursue opportunities to better their economic prospects.
Students from multiple secondary schools along the Corentyne Coast took to the over 20 booths for insights on both government and business entities’ products and services.
Meanwhile, ExxonMobil Guyana and other major players in the local oil and gas industry were on board to facilitated on-site job interviews.
Formal remarks were also given at the opening ceremony by Professor Gomathinayagam Subramamian, Director of UGBC, and Ms. Geraldine John, Human Resources Manager of ExxonMobil Guyana Ltd.
