Omai’s underground drilling of historic Gilt Creek deposit to go beneath Wenot “superpit” – CEO
The Wenot and Gilt-Creek deposits
Kaieteur News – Canadian miner, Omai Gold Mines, has embarked on an aggressive exploration campaign aimed at unlocking deeper mineral potential at its historic Gilt Creek deposit as well as beneath the Wenot deposit. This is according to President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Elaine Ellingham.
Omai holds a 100% interest in the past-producing Omai gold project in Guyana, located in Region Seven (Cuyuni-Mazaruni). The project encompasses two orogenic gold deposits: the shear-hosted Wenot Deposit and the adjacent intrusive-hosted Gilt Creek Deposit.
In a recent interview with Crux Investor, Ellingham confirmed that the third rig began drilling at Gilt Creek, located approximately 400 meters north of the Wenot deposit which is considered a “superpit.”
Ellingham explained that the Gilt Creek deposit holds particular significance as it was the original site on which the Omai mine was established. “The Gilt Creek deposit is what the Omai mine was initially built for and so we are working on the underground extension of that,” she stated.
She noted that the company completed an initial hole before Christmas which yielded promising results, and that a second hole is currently underway. “So, we’re down at about, I think 1,60 metres…and so we’ve been drilling through that Gilt Creek intrusion… I think between 200 [metres], I think [to] 275 [metres],” she explained.
The drill hole, Ellingham said, will extend to a depth of about 1,100 meters and is designed to probe beneath the Wenot deposit to assess what she described as “blue-sky potential” in deeper zones. Blue sky potential, is a term used in the mining industry to refer to the possibility of uncovering significant, previously unknown mineralization. While not yet confirmed, such potential represents a high-reward opportunity for Omai, as deeper drilling could reveal new high-grade gold zones well below the existing resource.
She said, “We’re going to extend that hole because that’s going to go underneath the Wenot deposit…to explore the blue-sky potential I guess we could call it at depth underneath Wenot because remember, they’re vertical zones.”
A 2024 Mineral Resource Estimate (MRE) for the gold project outlined 2.0 million ounces of gold indicated and 2.3 million ounces inferred.
Once a prolific gold producer from 1993 to 2005, the mine yielded 3.8 million ounces of gold, producing an average of more than 300,000 ounces of gold per year during a period when gold traded below US$400 per ounce.
Since its return to Guyana’s mining industry, Omai has been more focused on the Wenot deposit.
