‘One Guyana’ King and Queen of the Sand Football
Kaieteur Sports – The quarterfinals of the One Guyana Kings and Queens of the Sand football competition in the Bauxite Mining Town of Linden on Friday night last was underlined by a magnificent performance by Deon Charter who blasted a helmet-trick (4-goals ) to lead Hardknocks into the semifinals of this third edition.
Playing at the People’s Progressive Party ground, ad contesting the feature match of the quarterfinals, Team Minerals were no match for the lads from Hardknocks who were already 4-0 up when Team Minerals were able to score their first.
Charter was in ripping form as he hammered home goal in the 4th, 8h, 19th and 31st minute and found able support from Colwin Drakes who tipped in a double in the 13th and 17th minute with the other coming from Clive Nobrega in the 34th minute. Jermain King netted the two goals Team Minerals were limited to, in the 18th and 26th minute.
Contesting the third quarterfinal, Goal IQ squeezed past Young Gunners in a testing encounter, 2-1. Goals were hard to come by in a match which saw both teams very solid in defense which afforded the warring opponents limited chances on goal.
But it was Goal IQ who broke the deadlock in the 20th minute through a Jamal Haynes goal. Eight minutes it was back to level terms when Young Gunners’ Teffon Reynolds found the back of the nets. Extra time was needed to separate the two sides, and it was Goal IQ who capitalised on the opportunity, scoring the winner in the 38th minute thanks to Nathenial Issacs.
Spaniard was also subjected to fighting hard to book their final four spot having to overcome a tough Bombers, 4-3. It was Bombers who had taken the lead in just the second minute of the game when Shemiah Samuels netted the first of his two goals.
But they could have hardly celebrated their early lead as 60 seconds later, Shane Luckie drew Spaniard on even keel with the first of his brace, his second coming two minutes later to give Spaniard the lead.
This advantage was doubled in the 14th minute when Brandon Solomon found the back of the nets. Dequan Samuels narrowed the advantage when he found Bombers’ second goal in the 23rd minute but the two-goal cushion was restored through Sigmund Cobena’s 28th minute goal.
Shemiah Samuels’ second goal in the 34th minute just reduced the margin of defeat by one goal as time ran out and they fell, 3-4.
LA Ballers made light work of their HH Ballers rivals as they romped to an easy 5-1 win on the back of a double from Kevin Gentle in the 9th and 32nd minute. Admirable support was had from Jashawn Moore (17th), Andre Mayers (29th), and Amaneki Buntin in the 34th minute. HH Ballers’ consolation goal was scored by Cedric Hunte in the 28th minute.
Prior to the quarterfinals there was an exhibition match between female students from Mackenzie High and Multilateral which ended 4-0 in favour of the former. A double strike each from Zareika Caesar (2nd, 14th), and Tiffiann David (4th, 6th) was enough to seal the win for Mackenzie High.
