Kaieteur News – General Secretary of the People’s Progressive Party/ Civic (PPP/C), Bharrat Jagdeo has stated that former President and leader of the People’s National Congress/Reform (PNC/R), David Granger should have thrown his support behind the PPP, given the tangible progress made by the Irfaan Ali-led administration over the past five years.
Jagdeo made comments during his press conference on Thursday at Freedom House. There he expressed his dissatisfaction with Granger’s decision to throw his support behind the PNC, which he said continues to offer citizens empty promises, while the PPP has been delivering on its commitments. “We said world class education, we’re working on it and you’ve seen evidence of it. We said we’ll transform the infrastructure, you see evidence of it, we said health care, we’re working on it, we’re going to do it, we put back the children’s grant, double the old age pension, the joint services bonus,” Jagdeo outlined.
His comments come in response to a recent interview Granger had with Kaieteur News when he said that he shall never walk away from the hardworking members, especially the women and young people of the PNCR. Granger also urged young voters not to be swayed by rhetoric and empty promises. Referring to Granger’s warning to young voters, Jagdeo said he couldn’t agree with Granger more.
However, he was quick to remind the public of what he described as the former president’s failure to deliver on promises during his own tenure. Jagdeo accused Granger of hypocrisy, stating that his current endorsement of PNCR and A Partnership for National Unity (APNU) Coalition contradicts his own advice to voters.
“If anything, Granger should have thrown his support behind the PPP. He should have said, I endorse the PPP fully, if he actually believed that you should not be swayed by rhetoric and empty promises. Instead, he has gone back to supporting the empty rhetoric and promises,” the General Secretary continued.
Further, Jagdeo argued that in this era, political parties are making a whole range of new promises. “So Granger says this, and then he does this…he throws his full support behind APNU, with the same empty promises and rhetoric he throws his full support…to seem like a statement, make a very, lofty statement to young people and everyone else and then, on the other hand, he goes back to the same thing,” he added.
The PNCR is the largest political party that’s part of the APNU coalition. APNU had identified PNCR leader Aubrey Norton as their presidential candidate for the upcoming General and Regional Elections slated to be held on September 1.
