Kaieteur News – Years after he was freed of a rape charge former President of the Guyana Teachers’ Union (GTU), Colwyn King was today convicted on another one by a jury in the Georgetown High Court.
King was found guilty on two counts of rape of a child under the age of 16 years old before Justice Simone Morris. The incidents occurred in April 2021. The first assault took place at night when no one else was present, while the second occurred in the afternoon, again in isolation. The virtual complainant is identified as a female who was six years old at the time of the incident.
The prosecution led by State Counsel: Muntaz Ali and Geneva Wills. King was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Tonza Sarrabo. The former GTU head had been out on bail during the proceedings but was immediately remanded to prison following the jury’s verdict.
His sentencing has been set for July 17, 2025, at 9:00hrs. King previously faced a similar rape charge in 2009, but was acquitted by a jury in 2016 following a trial at the High Court. The GTU president was arrested on October 14, 2009 and was released on $100,000 bail after a teenage girl leveled charges of being sexually involved with him at a Princess Street hotel. Six years after being charged for statutory rape the former GTU President was freed of the charge.
The allegations which first surfaced in October 2009 are that the teen was taken to purchase food and then taken to a hotel on Princes Street, where there was allegedly some sexual activity. The girl was picked up by a police patrol on Sheriff Street while wandering. It was established that she was sexually active.
King’s previous trial before the jury in the Georgetown High Court ended in a not guilty verdict. Ten of the 12 jurors presented a not guilty verdict while the other two voted guilty. King who served for several years as the head of the GTU cross-examined a number of the witnesses called to the stand by the prosecution.
The matter was presided over by Justice Priya Sewnarine-Beharry. Sources from inside the Courtroom said when Justice Sewnarine-Beharry declared the 10 to 2 not guilty judgment she also told King that he may have gotten away from man but he cannot get away from God.
