Kaieteur News – Indian construction company, Ashoka Buildcon Limited has secured a US$67 million contract from the Government of Guyana to execute phase two of the East Coast of Demerara (ECD) to East Bank of Demerara (EBD) road linkage project.
According to a media report from CNBC TV 18 dated June 19, 2025, the company on Thursday said it has signed the contract with the government to execute phase two which will see road works being done from Eccles to Providence on the East Bank area.
“The international contract is valued at $67.25 million (approximately ₹562 core) and will be executed over a period of 18 months. The company had earlier received the letter of acceptance (LoA) from Guyana’s Public Works Department on June 18, 2028,” CNBC reported.
Meanwhile, Kaieteur News reported back in June 2022 that the Guyana government through the Ministry of Public Works and Ashoka Buildcon Limited had signed a US$106.4 million contract to initially commence works for a four-lane road link between Ogle, ECD and Eccles, EBD.
It was reported that the project is being financed through a loan provided by the Indian Export Import Bank.
The new highway road which is in its final stages of completion measures approximately 7.8 kilometres.
At the signing and turn sod ceremony in 2022, Minister of Public Works, Bishop Juan Edghill said the project was the first phase connecting the East Coast to the East Bank.
“The intent is that this must be able to get all the way, linking the Ogle International Airport with the Timehri International Airport. This is just phase one and, in that linkage, there is a number of connected roads bringing to us to what is now commonly known as the East Bank Road,” he had stated.
The road which will connect the two areas, and open new lands for housing, agriculture and industrial development, Minister Edghill pointed out.
