Traffic Chief Mahendra Singh will soon dispatch over 1600 letters to motorists across the country to ascertain how they acquired their licences, President Irfaan Ali announced on Friday.
The President was at the time speaking at his first press conference for the year held at the Office of the President.
He said the move is part of broader efforts by the administration to investigate the legitimacy of driver’s licences and strengthen accountability across the country’s road traffic administration system.
President Ali also announced that driver’s licence testing is transitioning to a fully digital school platform, where questions are automatically generated through random sampling.
“Nobody would have any question paper two days before. If you go now to write it, 10 minutes after, the questions are completely different,” the president told reporters.
He noted that AI traffic cameras, radar systems, and smart traffic signals form critical components of the government’s broader modernisation agenda.
In December, the Head-of-State gave persons holding an invalid or illegally obtained driver’s licence six weeks to surrender same.
His announcement followed a comprehensive post-audit conducted by the government in collaboration with the Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA), the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the Ministry of Public Service, Government Efficiency and Implementation.
“We are giving the public six weeks to surrender invalid licences,” the president announced during the Guyana Police Force’s traditional Christmas breakfast at the Police Officers’ Mess Annexe at Eve Leary in Georgetown.
The audit, powered by integrated digital systems, exposed serious discrepancies in the driver’s licensing process, specifically, cases where individuals obtained practical certifications and licences without ever passing the mandatory theoretical examination.
“If 150 people pass the theory but 400 receive practical certificates, something is wrong,” the president stated. “Technology has allowed us to trace every step and we have all the names,” he said.
During the six-week grace period, persons who obtained their licences under irregular circumstances were required to surrender their documents and re-enter the licensing process legitimately.
The government had threatened to publish the names, suspend the licences and initiate legal action.
The President Ali, at that time said that the move is part of a broader national effort to promote institutional integrity, digital transformation, and accountability. (DPI)
