(Kaieteur News) – Police have confirmed that one person has died and one has been critically injured in a boat incident in the vicinity of the Tapir Landing in the Cuyuni River on Thursday, resulting in the death of 57-year-old boat captain Steve Daniels. One other person has been admitted to the Bartica Regional Hospital.
Police said initial enquiries revealed that a 26-foot wooden boat, powered by a 200 HP Yamaha outboard engine and operated by a 51-year-old boat captain of Batavia Village, Cuyuni River, was proceeding in the vicinity of Tapir Landing with four occupants when a collision reportedly occurred with an 18-foot aluminum boat, powered by a 40 HP Yamaha outboard engine and operated by the now deceased.”
As a result of the collision, the captain of the aluminium vessel along with three occupants received injuries about their bodies. The captain was observed motionless, while one of the occupants sustained serious injuries. The other occupants received minor injuries.
The injured persons, as well at the motionless man, were all taken to the Bartica Regional Hospital. Daniels was pronounced dead on arrival. The persons with minor injuries were treated and sent away, while the critically injured was admitted and is said to be in a serious condition.
The operator of the 26-foot wooden boat is currently in custody assisting with the investigation.
