Kaieteur News – A 25-year-old businessman was remanded to prison on Friday after being charged in connection with the alleged abuse of his wife, who recently shared her harrowing story publicly on social media.

Karran Sukhan, of Lot 143 #2 Village East Canje Berbice, was previously in hiding after his wife Joanna Ramoutar posted details of their abusive six-year relationship on Facebook and filed an official report with the police.

He was arrested Thursday evening and charged with six offences; one count of assault causing bodily harm, two counts of threatening language, and three counts of threatening behaviour committed on his wife.

According to police, the offences occurred on June 6, 2025, at the couple’s East Canje residence.

Sukhan appeared before Magistrate Michelle Mathias who read the charges to him. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and was remanded to prison. Sukhan is expected to return to court on June 23, 2025 for further proceedings.

The charges come just a day after Ramoutar, a mother of two, publicly detailed years of physical, emotional, and psychological abuse she said she endured during their relationship. Recalling the beginning of her ordeal, Ramoutar said, “In October 2018, I began a relationship with him. By March 2019, the abuse started. It began with slaps and then escalated to brutal, life-threatening violence. He kicked me in the stomach, stomped on my head, and beat me repeatedly. Over the years, the violence only worsened.”

She detailed several specific incidents of abuse, including:

“One time, I fell asleep and didn’t hear him calling my phone. When I answered the second call, he was calling me to open the door. He kicked me in my stomach, and I hurt myself.”
“A few months after I gave birth, he made me roll on hot concrete.”
“He slapped me while I was holding our one-month-old baby, causing the child to hit his head.”
“He forced me to kneel with my hands in the air while he sat with his feet on my shoulders, pulling my hair and cuffing me.”
“He hit me with a hose, pelted me with plates, cups, phones, shoes—anything nearby if he was displeased.”
“If there was dust in his water or a speck of eggshell in his food, I was beaten.”
“He beat me for not finishing dinner before he got home, for asking him to stop cheating, or simply for not wanting to have sex.”
“He forced sex on me daily. When I resisted, I was physically and verbally assaulted.”
“He tied a wire around my neck, fastened it to a grill, and tried to pull me off a bed, threatening to kill me. I was pregnant at the time.”
“Sometimes he beat me while I was holding our newborn.”

In her post, Ramoutar said she finally escaped with the help of her family and is now seeking justice and protection for herself and her children. The police have since confirmed that an investigation is ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security, in a statement issued Thursday evening, announced that a specialised team from its Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Policy Unit (SO&DVPU) was dispatched to intervene and provide support.

“Our priority is to ensure the victim receives comprehensive and compassionate care,” the ministry stated.

So young, started a relationship that now has 2 young children and endured
endless assaults ?
Where were her parents ?
Now, the chronic abuser and father of 2 young children are in the
lockup… probably will be there for a long time coming.
So, what happens when he is released ? Playing the old tunes all over
again ? The young mother needs protection from the abuser, for life
if necessary.
