Kaieteur Sports- It was a rough start for Guyana’s Lady Jags in the 2025 CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championship, as they were handed a crushing 8–0 defeat by the United States yesterday in their opening Group A clash at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela, Costa Rica.
The Americans, perennial powerhouses in women’s football, showed their dominance early and often at the Estadio Nacional, with Izzy Engles registering a first-half hat-trick (5’, 24’, 41’) to lead the charge. Engles netted in the 48th minute to complete helmet-trick.

The Lady Jags will now turn their attention to their next fixture against tournament hosts, Costa Rica.
Kennedy Fuller (13’), Sealy Strawn (25’), Linda Ullmark (37’) and Emma Johnson (77’) also got on the scoresheet in what turned out to be a one-sided contest.
From the opening whistle, the USA dictated the pace and tempo, keeping the Lady Jags pinned in their half for much of the match.
The gulf in quality was reflected in the stats; the United States racked up 30 shots—20 of them on target, while Guyana registered two shots in either column.
The result leaves Guyana with an uphill battle in Group A, as they now turn their attention to their next fixture against tournament hosts Costa Rica on June 1, followed by a June 3 encounter with Puerto Rico.
This year marks the Lady Jags’ second appearance at the CONCACAF U-20 Women’s Championship.
Their maiden campaign in 2020 was one for the history books, as they advanced to the quarterfinals before bowing out to Haiti.
While yesterday’s performance was far from ideal, the Lady Jags will be looking to regroup quickly and channel the fighting spirit that earned them continental respect five years ago.
