Kaieteur News- Two men were charged on Tuesday with discharging a firearm within a public place when they appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
The accused, 23-year-old Lidj Grant of Lot 408 ‘A’ Field, Sophia, Georgetown, and 34-year-old Andra Stewart of Guyhoc Park and Fifth Street, Alberttown, Georgetown, were charged separately for the crime.
It is alleged that on May 20, 2025, at Plum Park, Sophia, Greater Georgetown, the men discharged a loaded firearm in a public place. Grant and Stewart pleaded not guilty to the charge.
The prosecution stated that Stewart was previously charged with another serious offence and was granted bail. However, while on bail, he committed another offence. Further, the prosecution said there is footage of the incident, and both defendants’ hands were tested for gun residue. They are awaiting the results for confirmation.
The defence, led by attorney Terrence Ferreira, represented Grant, while attorney Ronald Bostwick represented Stewart.
Ferreira told the court that on the night in question, his client (Grant) was on his way home when he was approached by two men who fired shots and as a result, he took cover, but he was shot in his abdomen. As a result, Grant frequently needs to visit the hospital.
Ferreira requested bail on behalf of his client, noting that the video footage in the police’s possession cannot confirm whether his client is in the video.
Meanwhile, Bostwick stated that his client was granted bail for a previous offence, and as a result, the court may not grant Stewart bail. The attorney argued that his client was shot in his back and there is no evidence to confirm that he committed the offence since the video footage and the residue test are both outstanding.
Moreover, Bostwick said that his client is fortunate to be alive and not paralysed, adding that prison is not the best place for recuperation. The attorney, in closing, said that his client was arrested while seeking medical attention, and he is requesting that Stewart be placed on bail, even if it is with reporting conditions.
Magistrate Azore, after hearing the arguments, released Grant on $250,000 bail with conditions that he reports to the Turkeyen Police Station every other Friday starting May 30, 2025, until the trial commence.
However, Stewart was denied bail due to him committing an offence while on bail for another serious offence.
The matters were adjourned to June 30, 2025.
The Guyana Police Force said that two unidentified men allegedly carried out the shooting while dressed in dark-coloured clothing and face masks and armed with handguns.
“According to the victims, on the date and time mentioned, they were riding two separate motorcycles, heading North in ‘A’ Field, Sophia, in the vicinity of Mercy Wing Vocational Centre, when the two suspects rode up to them on a motorcycle (registration number unknown) and began to discharge several rounds in their direction. The victims said they jumped off their motorcycles and ran behind a truck, which was parked on the parapet of the street. The suspects continued riding their motorcycles and made good their escape,” police said
Police disclosed in its report that the scene was processed by ranks of the Crime Lab of the Criminal Investigations Department Headquarters (CID HQ), and 15 suspected 9mm spent shells were found. Several persons were questioned, and efforts were made to locate the suspects, but without success. Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in the area captured the scene, and investigators observed that it was an exchange of gunfire between the suspects and the victims.
