Kaieteur News- The Guyana Public Service Co-operative Credit Union (GPSCCU), in partnership with CaribDE (Caribbean Development Education), International Credit Union Education (ICUDE) mentors and facilitators opened on the Intelligent and Inclusive Finance Seminar, on Thursday.
The two-day seminar which concluded on Friday aimed at strengthening the capabilities of the attendees who are directors, employees and members of GPSCCU and partner credit unions.
The keynote address which was delivered by Ms. Jean Kamau – United Nations Resident Coordinator for Guyana provided the global context for development in an ever-growing economy.
“This initiative comes at a critical time in Guyana’s development, as the country undergoes unprecedented economic expansion. The seminar is designed to explore the strategic role that credit unions can play in ensuring that growth is inclusive, sustainable, and community centered,” a statement from the GPSCCU) said.
Guest speakers and facilitators guided participants through in-depth discussions and workshops on a range of important topics including: Guyana’s Financial System and the Role of Credit Unions in an Emerging Economy, Understanding and Managing Risk in the Credit Union System, Interpreting Credit Union Financial Statements, Exploring the Role of Artificial Intelligence in the Credit Union Movement, Understanding Interest Rates and Member Dividends, and Promoting Good Governance and Effective Leadership.
Further, the GPSCCU said its leaders, volunteers, employees and members were empowered with the tools and knowledge to enhance financial literacy, promote transparency, and drive inclusive economic participation.
Shona Smart, CaribDE -Seminar Coordinator and GPSCCU Human Resources and Administrative Manager noted: “The more informed our members are, the stronger our institutions become. This seminar is about giving credit union members the knowledge they need to lead, manage, and benefit from cooperative finance.”
The programme concluded with a networking session to encourage continued dialogue and collaboration among stakeholders across the national and regional credit union system.
