Kaieteur News- The Regional Democratic Council (RDC) of Region One intends to spend $ 22 million to rehabilitate the Mabaruma Primary School.
The $22M is part of the $3.8 billion allocated to the education sector in the 2025 national budget.
The Regional Administration, in its invitation for bids, revealed that the project is estimated to cost $22,873,862.
This publication understands that this project is one of the numerous projects being undertaken by the government, which forms part of a broader initiative of improving the access and quality of education for all children. The government announced that it would be repairing and upgrading schools across the country to ensure children are learning in a safe and comfortable environment.
“In addition to building new schools, what we are doing currently is repairing schools. The President has made it clear that he does not want any school to be without functioning washrooms and plumbing, electricity, a good roof where there is no leaking, and repairing the dilapidated-looking buildings,” Education Minister Priya Manickchand mentioned.
Notably, at the presentation of this year’s budget, it was announced that the government, in the last four years, built over 15 new primary schools, reconstructed nine, extended seventeen, while construction is ongoing for 11 more new primary schools across the country.
Additionally, the RDC is also seeking a contractor to rehabilitate the Education Department Building, which is located in the RDC’s compound at Mabaruma. These works are estimated at $24,910,924.
This publication understands that bids are expected to open on May 27, 2025, at the National Procurement and Tender Administration Board (NPTAB) office.
