(Kaieteur News) – The Guyana Power and Light Incorporated (GPL) on Thursday said it has mobilised emergency teams across several communities nationwide to restore electricity following Wednesday’s storm, which toppled utility poles, downed trees, and caused widespread damage to the transmission and distribution network.
The storm, which brought heavy winds and significant rainfall, caused the most extensive damage across the Essequibo Islands, the Essequibo Coast, and sections of Demerara, where debris and fallen trees made contact with the electricity network and triggered multiple service interruptions.
Among the hardest-hit areas was Carlton Hall Backlands, where two utility poles collapsed under the combined pressure of heavy winds and waterlogged soil. GPL teams dispatched to the site faced significant challenges navigating the saturated terrain, eventually requiring an excavator to improve access and allow crews to safely carry out repairs.
Residents from Colombia to Central Mahaicony, who experienced outages connected to the same area, were kept informed through a series of updates on GPL’s Facebook page as works progressed.
North Georgetown was also affected, with a fallen pole — again attributed to adverse weather — cutting power to consumers in the area. GPL confirmed a technical team was dispatched to assess the damage and carry out remedial works.
GPL reported significant progress in restoring power to affected areas. Approximately 90 percent of customers along the Essequibo Coast had been reconnected by Thursday, with the remainder expected to follow within the hour. Electricity supply was fully restored to Leguan, while customers on Wakenaam were expected to be back online within the same timeframe. Restoration efforts in the remaining affected parts of Demerara were described as progressing steadily, with full restoration anticipated within three hours of the update.
GPL apologised to affected customers for the inconvenience and thanked them for their patience as crews continued to work around the clock to complete restoration across all impacted areas.
