Kaieteur News- Ambassadors of the United States, United Kingdom, Canada and the European Union have called for calm amid tensions here over the death of Adriana Younge, even as they expressed condolences over her passing.
In separate statements, the High Commissioner to the UK in Guyana Mrs. Jane Miller noted that while she understands the strength of feeling over the issue, she is confident that the right way forward is always through legal and non-violent means. The British High Commissioner noted that “looting and destruction of property are harmful to all.”
She added that the UK remains committed to supporting the people of Guyana, our shared democratic principles, and the country’s continued stability and prosperity.
For his part, High Commissioner of Canada to Guyana, Sébastien Sigouin expressed his heartfelt condolences following the tragic death of Ms. Younge. The High Commissioner shared his deep concern and sorrow over the crisis and civil unrest that have happened in Guyana last week. He therefore encouraged all Guyanese citizens to remain calm and voice their concerns through non-violent means and to adhere to the rule of law. “Looting and destruction of property are harmful to all. I strongly urge all involved to commit to peace. Canada remains committed to supporting the people of Guyana, our shared democratic principles, and the country’s continued stability and prosperity,” the High Commissioner stated.
US ambassador Nicole D. Theriot expressed her heartfelt condolences and shared her sorrow over the crisis and civil unrest that have happened in Guyana. “I encourage all Guyanese citizens to remain calm and voice their concerns through non-violent means and to adhere to the rule of law.” Meanwhile, Head of the European Union in Guyana Rene van Nes, called for similar calm as the country mourns the loss of a young soul. He said that the European Union remains committed to supporting the people of Guyana, our shared democratic principles, and the country’s continued stability and prosperity.
