Kaieteur News- Two men were last Friday remanded to prison, when they appeared at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court for larceny charges.
The defendants, 46-year-old Terence Park of Lot 129 Melanie Damishana, East Cost Demerara (ECD), and 25-year-old David Singh of Lot 52 Laing Street, Charlestown, Georgetown, appeared before Senior Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
Park and Singh pleaded not guilty to the charges, which alleged that on April 28, 2025, at Saffon Street, Georgetown, they broke into Wi Lin supermarket and stole $250,000 cash, $100,000 in Phone cards, a quantity of cigarettes valued at $50,000, 40 bags rice valued at $S100,000 and five shopping carts valued at $75,000; total value $575,000.
Park was represented by attorney Jevon Cox, while Singh appeared unrepresented. Cox told the court that on the night in question, his client was at the Kingstown Seawall preparing to go home, after receiving a call from the mother of his child informing him of the unrest. Park was stopped and arrested by police who were in the area of the alleged robbery.
Cox added that at the time of his clients’ arrest, he had in his possession a bag with two sneakers which belonged to him but the police claimed it was stolen. However, the sneakers mysteriously disappeared while Park was in police custody.
The attorney said his client was initially told he was charged for terrorism and was later informed that he is being charged with larceny, he highlighted that it is impossible for his client to steal 40 bags of rice on a motorcycle.
The prosecution maintained that Park was arrested not far from the business and his release would be a safety risk. Magistrate Azore remanded the accused to prison until May 28, 2025.
