(Kaieteur News) – Police in Regional Division Seven are investigating an alleged robbery under arms that occurred on Monday, June 15, 2026, between 10:00 hrs and 17:30 hrs at Sewanda Backdam, Region Seven. The robbery was reportedly committed against two Brazilian national gold miners, aged 50 and 44, who reside and work in the area.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the victims operate separate mining operations located approximately 200 metres apart. At the time of the incident, four masked men, reportedly armed with firearms, entered one of the operations while the 44-year-old victim and his workers were conducting mining activities.
The suspects held the victim and his workers at gunpoint and demanded that the wash-down process be completed. They then robbed the victim of 15 ounces of raw gold, $150,000 in cash and one red ATV, with the stolen items valued at approximately $15.4 million.
The suspects then proceeded to the second mining operation, where they held the 50-year-old victim and his workers at gunpoint and again demanded that the wash-down process be completed. They robbed the victim of 30 ounces of raw gold, one 20-pennyweight gold chain, one 20-pennyweight gold band, one 6-pennyweight gold ring, one red ATV and $300,000 in cash. The stolen items were valued at approximately $29.265 million.
The suspects also took a quantity of clothing, groceries and internet equipment before making good their escape.
During the incident, the 50-year-old victim was allegedly assaulted and sustained injuries. The two ATVs were later found abandoned near the Puruni River.
The suspects remain at large as investigations continue.
