Kaieteur News- Local businessman, Dr. Terrence Campbell has called on the Government of Guyana to end corruption, spread the country’s wealth and prioritise the people.
Campbell, who is also a member of the Natural Resource Fund (NRF) Investment Committee, was speaking to public sector workers, during the labour day rally and march on Thursday. His comments came amid concerns over the mismanagement of the Guyana Police Force (GPF) and the handling of the nation’s oil wealth.
“We have a lot of corruption going on in the country, a lot of mismanagement,” Campbell told Kaieteur News during the event. “And the corruption and the mismanagement have made life difficult for the poor people, the working class. So today, I’m out here in support of the working class.”

Dr. Campbell emphasised that the ongoing mismanagement is negatively affecting the working class, a group he has long supported in the call for change. He said with Guyana’s newfound oil wealth, no citizen should be suffering or forced to strike for better wages.
“I’m here in support of change,” he stated. “Change in government, transparency, accountability, reduction in production costs, and sharing the spires of this country. This country is now oil-rich, and nobody should be poor, nobody should be suffering. I’m here to protest again the dehumanising of our people. There is enough for everyone.”
The businessman also pointed to the government’s distribution of land as another example of inequality. He said large plots of land are being handed out to government cronies, while ordinary Guyanese struggle to secure land for housing.
“And while people are trying just to get a piece of land to build a house, hundreds and hundreds of acres are being given out to cronies of the government,” he said. “That’s not right. So that’s an example with land of how you can help people with housing.”
He added, “The corruption that we have needs to be addressed. We need to settle good policies in place—not just handing money to other people, that’s fine, because we’re having immediate relief. But how do we build our people out? How do we create opportunities for our people to live a better life, to have a better quality of life? And that’s what we haven’t been focusing on.”
Campbell further criticised the government’s short-term solutions, particularly the distribution of cash grants. He argued that such measures, like the $100,000 grant given to citizens at Christmas and earlier this year, do not address the long-term needs of the people.
“They just want to give you a cash grant,” Campbell said. “But the $100,000 that people got at Christmas and earlier this year is all gone. What people want is real change in their lives. And so, we want policies that deliver that. It starts from the beginning—from education to vocational training, and focusing on different areas.”
Campbell stressed the importance of spreading the nation’s wealth to ensure a decent standard of living for all Guyanese.
“We’ve got to spread the wealth in this country. If we spread the wealth, then everybody can have a decent standard of living. But if we don’t, we’re sitting on a powder keg. It’s going to explode. People are frustrated, people are angry, and people are going to respond. The government should be for the people and to spread the wealth of this country and end the corruption,” Campbell concluded.
Dr. Campbell’s remarks highlight the growing discontent among workers who feel the country’s wealth is not being shared equitably, and calls for systemic changes that benefit the working class.
