Dear Editor,
The International community, the ABCE countries, must take note of the declining freedom being experienced in Guyana under the PPP administration. Democracy is thrown out the window. The party that complained about abuses of power by the PNC led coalition are doing the same thing as the predecessor. Rights are being abused. Free political campaigning, including challenging the PPP and protesting corruption, is not being permitted. Mr. Glenn Lall was invited to interact with persons living on a small street in Crab Wood Creek. It was a last-minute invitation by residents on the street. There was no announcement of a public meeting. Mr. Lall showed up to meet with persons who invited him for a conversation to listen to their concerns. Some 70 persons showed up to engage the KN publisher. Had the meeting been announced publicly, the crowd would have been larger as people are increasingly getting fed up of Jagdeo and Irfaan and those who prop them up to feed off the corrupt government. They want an alternative, a change. And change is coming! Everywhere people are complaining of PPP misgovernance.
As Glenn was engaging the people, listening to their issues and concerns in the community, a music truck, with goons, obviously directed by Freedom House (Jagdeo and Irfaan), came within a few yards disrupting the meeting. The PPP sound equipment started blaring, “Vote PPP” non-stop, drowning out the word-of-mouth exchange (no sound equipment to counter the PPP) between Glenn and the street residents. The PPP truck disrupters did not leave until the meeting was broken up. Clearly, Jagdeo and Irfaan’s motto is: Every Indian must fall behind PPP or else they will suffer the consequences. Clearly Jagdeo is worried about anyone seeking to form a political movement. It was no different from Burnham when Rodney started a movement in 1978. If Glenn’s supporters were to reciprocate what the PPP did, they would be arrested. The ruling party has been abusing the police and armed forces and thugs to restrict the democratic rights of the public as they march towards establishing an authoritarian state.
That is the freedom we live under in Guyana under Jagdeo and Irfaan Ali democracy. No dissent will be tolerated and no opposition views will be published in the state-owned newspaper. No campaign against the PPP will be allowed. We remember well what happened to Azruddin Mohamed when he went into PPP strongholds in March to meet with people who are fed up of the lies and betrayals of Jagdeo and Irfaan.
I appeal to Guyanese to stay strong. Don’t allow yourselves to be intimidated by Jagdeo, Irfaan, and goons. I urge Mr. Glenn Lall and Azruddin Mohamed to stay the course. Jagdeo and Irfaan are fearful of this combination!
Yours truly,
Danny Ramnarain
