Kaieteur Sports- Olympian Emanuel Archibald and triple jump standout Natrica Hooper will lead Team Guyana at the South American Athletics Championships, set for April 25–27 in Argentina.
The Athletics Association of Guyana (AAG) made the announcement yesterday, unveiling a strong lineup that also includes Noelex Holder (200m), Akeem Stewart (100m), Shemar Horatio (200m), Analisa Redmond (Long Jump), Kerion DeSouza (100m) and Leslain Baird (Javelin).
The team will be under the guidance of coach Quinse Clarke.
Despite holding Guyana’s national record in the 100m (10.09s), Archibald will focus on the Long Jump, where he also holds the national record with a leap of 8.12m, set in 2019 in Jamaica. He heads to Argentina with a season-best of 7.95m, recorded in March.
Hooper, meanwhile, is coming off a wind-assisted 14.10m winning jump (+2.5 m/s) at the Pepsi Florida Relays earlier this month, and will be aiming for the podium in the Triple Jump.
The AAG expressed its sincere gratitude to the Guyana Olympic Association and the Government of Guyana for their continued financial support.
At the last Championships held in 2021 in Ecuador, Guyana earned a bronze medal in the 4x100m relay.
The team of Archibald, Holder, Stewart, and Jeremey Bascom clocked 40.02s, finishing behind Brazil and Colombia.
Archibald also claimed silver in the 100m with a time of 10.23s, while Andrea Foster (800m), Jasmine Abrams (100m), and Jenea McCammon (100m hurdles) each secured bronze medals.
In 2023, however, Guyana did not make the podium at the Championships in São Paulo, Brazil. (Rawle Toney)
