Kaieteur Sports- The Guyana Harpy Eagles came on for praises from Director of Sport Steve Ninvalle, after etching their names deeper into West Indies cricket history, claiming their third consecutive title and 13th overall West Indies Four-Day Championship.
In his message, Ninvalle lauded the team’s exceptional performance and resilience, emphasizing the significance of this milestone in solidifying Guyana’s standing as a cricketing powerhouse in the region.
“This remarkable achievement not only cements Guyana’s place as the second most decorated team in the history of the West Indies Four-Day tournament, trailing only Barbados, but it also reflects the grit, discipline, and unwavering passion of our players, coaches, and administrators,” Ninvalle stated, Ninvalle said.
Guyana’s cricketing journey in the regional four-day format has been one of persistence, with the country first lifting the championship trophy in 1973, adding another in 1975.
Further titles followed in 1983, 1987, and 1993. A shared title in 1998 with the Leeward Islands marked their sixth, but it wasn’t until 2015 that Guyana broke a 17-year title drought, kickstarting a golden era.
Between 2015 and 2019, the Harpy Eagles captured five consecutive championships. Despite brief setbacks in 2020 and 2022, the team has bounced back to dominate once more, sealing three straight titles from 2023 to 2025.
Ninvalle highlighted the significant role of government investment in driving sporting success across the nation.
Under the leadership of President Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the guidance of Minister of Culture, Youth and Sport, Hon. Charles S. Ramson Jr., Guyana has seen unprecedented growth in sports infrastructure and funding.
“The recent allocation of G$8 billion in the 2025 National Budget—a 73.9% increase from the previous G$4.6 billion—demonstrates the Government’s unyielding commitment to the development of sport,” he noted.
This financial commitment has helped to elevate not only cricket, but all sporting disciplines in Guyana, providing athletes with the tools and environment needed to succeed regionally and globally.
In an era increasingly dominated by the shorter formats of the game, Ninvalle took time to reflect on the importance of the Four-Day format, often referred to as the backbone of traditional cricket.
“This victory is a timely reminder of the enduring value of patience, technique, and resilience—the hallmarks of the Four-Day format,” he said.
As cricket continues to hold a deep emotional and cultural significance across the Caribbean, the Harpy Eagles’ continued success, Ninvalle said, serves as a beacon of national pride and a source of inspiration for aspiring athletes.
Ninvalle extended heartfelt congratulations to Captain Tevin Imlach, the entire team, coaching staff, management, and the Guyana Cricket Board for their tireless efforts and dedication.
“Your unity and belief have brought glory to our nation. We look forward to many more proud moments where Guyanese talent shines bright,” he added.
