Kaieteur News– Two fishermen were reported missing after their boat was found drifting at sea near Tain Beach along the Corentyne Coast, Region Six.
The incident has sparked concerns from the families of the missing men, who are pleading for more urgency from law enforcement in locating them. The missing individuals have been identified as 17-year-old Vishaul Parmanand of Lot 23 Cotton Tree, Old Road, West Coast Berbice, and 32-year-old Daniel Inshanali, also known as “Fine Man,” of Lot 27 “D” Edward Village, West Coast Berbice.
According to police reports, Vishaul’s father, Mohindranauth Parmanand, also known as “Mohin”, stated that around 11:00 hrs on Monday, he had travelled to Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, where he purchased a new boat and engine. His son, Vishaul, had requested to use the boat after installing the engine.
“Both men then filled up the boat and departed Crabwood Creek, heading to Rosignol, West Coast Berbice by sea,” the father told police. However, when the boat failed to arrive by 17:00 hrs the same day, the father attempted to contact his son but received no response.
On Tuesday, around 10:00 hrs, Mohindranauth received information that the boat was seen drifting near Tain Koker, Corentyne. The engine was still mounted, but the two men were not seen. “Police were called and responded. Checks were made along the shoreline, but the two individuals were not located. Due to the incoming tide, officers could not make it to the drifting boat, which continued to move away from the beach. Efforts to recover the boat are still being made,” police stated.
Authorities also confirmed that neither of the missing men possessed a captain’s licence. Meanwhile, the wife of Daniel Inshanali, Rebecca Inshanali, expressed frustration with the response from police. Speaking to Kaieteur News on Thursday, she said: “The whole family looking, the police not really involved, they didn’t call we back. We need more support — it would be better — but we not getting the support that we need.”
She disclosed that Inshanali has been a fisherman for nearly 14 years and would try his best to financially support his two children. “He does always bring down boats and he’s a good driver. He knows what exactly he is doing. It’s very strange that he is not here,” she added.
Fighting back tears, she continued: “I don’t know what to say. I hope he is alive. I have hope still. He does try he best to make it work for the children, but I am very worried.” Efforts were made to contact Mohindranauth Parmanand and around 18:45 hrs responded, stating that he was at sea with police, actively participating in the search for the missing men.
Kaieteur News contacted Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum, who confirmed that the commander in charge of the operation reported to him that police began looking for the men on Wednesday, a day after they went missing. The commander told Blanhum, “Sir, upon receipt of the report yesterday (Wednesday), ranks did go to the seashore with the relatives of the missing persons in an attempt to retrieve the boat. However, they were unable to get to the vessel because the tide had taken it out. The general area was also searched at that time,” he said. Blanhum added that officers from Berbice accompanied relatives on a search from Albion to Rose Hall earlier Thursday morning and that the Coast Guard was preparing to conduct further searches. Investigations are ongoing
