Kaieteur Sports- In anticipation of the 11th Annual Milo/Massy Under-18 Football Championship starting on Saturday (March 15), the organisers of the event, Petra Organisation met with the participating teams yesterday at the National Racquet Centre (NRC) for a team briefing.

Representatives from participating schools gathered for photo-op with Petra executives and key stakeholders at yesterday’s Milo U18 School’s Football team briefing exercise.

Officially launched on February 27, the one-month-long championship has once again garnered enthusiastic support, with Nestlé Milo continuing its sponsorship of the highly anticipated schools’ tournament.

This year’s edition will feature 24 teams, including nine from the Georgetown area, two from Region One, one from Region Two, three from Region Three, three from the East Coast (Region Four), two from Region Seven, and one from East Bank. Meanwhile, teams from Regions Five, Six, and Nine are yet to be confirmed due to inclement weather conditions.

Speaking at the briefing, Co-Director of the Petra Organisation, Troy Mendonca, expressed excitement for the tournament’s return.

“The 11th Annual Milo/Massy U18 Football Tournament will kick off this Saturday with matches at the Ministry of Education Complex and Queen’s College grounds.”

Mendonca also extended gratitude to the long-standing sponsors, Milo and Massy Distribution, along with the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, for their continued support.

“We look forward to seven weeks of exciting competition, and may the best team win,” he added, urging football enthusiasts to come out and experience the electrifying atmosphere of the tournament.

The championship provides a crucial platform for young players to showcase their skills, gain exposure, and build their profiles as they pursue future opportunities in professional football.

Also present at the briefing was Assistant Director of Sports, Franklin Wilson, who commended the Petra Organisation for their dedication to youth football.

“On behalf of the National Sports Commission and the Ministry of Culture, Youth, and Sport, we extend our appreciation for your commitment to youth football over the past decade.”

The tournament officially kicks off at 12:00 noon on Saturday, following the traditional march-past, scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Meanwhile an official list of participating teams will be issued today, following the conclusion of the year’s elimination phase.

Football fans are encouraged to come out and support the next generation of football stars.
