Kaieteur Sports – Swimming Delroy Tyrrell will have to wait a little longer before he can make a splash for Guyana.
On August 16, Kaieteur News reported that Tyrrell’s application to switch from Trinidad and Tobago to Guyana is with Swimming’s global governing body, World Aquatics.
Currently on a scholarship at the College of Saint Rose in Division Two of the NCAA, Tyrrell requested last year to switch his affiliation from Trinidad & Tobago Aquatics to the Guyana Amateur Swimming Association (GASA).
Dwayne Scott, the GASA president, said they’re awaiting written confirmation regarding when Tyrrell will be eligible to compete.
Scott noted that Tyrrell must wait 12 months for the change in national association to take effect, but he also pointed out that some unintentional actions by Tyrrell could cause delays.
Scott explained that while Tyrrell occasionally competes in Guyana for the Dorado Speed Swim Club, he also continues to represent his swim club in Trinidad and Tobago.
However, Legal Counsel of World Aquatics, Jan Exner, on August 30, in an email to Tyrell, said the Global swimming body double-checked their internal systems and e-mail inboxes, “Still, unfortunately, we have no record of any previous submission regarding the Athlete, either by an individual or by the GASA.”
On May 14, Exner also stated that “World Aquatics had no record of previous submission regarding the Athlete [Delroy Tyrrell] neither by Guyana Amateur Swimming Association…”
She reminded that only World Aquatics Members/National Federations have the authority to submit the request for the change of Sports Nationality on behalf of the athlete who wishes to join them.
Despite Exner revelation, Kaieteur News understands that the GASA, in a letter signed by Scott, wrote to World Aquatics July 2023, applying for a change of National Association.
