Dear Editor,
If I missed it please pardon me, but the President is yet to comment on the listing of several prominent Guyanese and their businesses. The silence is defining and rings of another failure by Ali.
The media has indicated that the Minister of Finance and the Guyana Revenue Authority have dispatched letters to the US requesting detailed information into the financial improprieties by the persons and businesses that were listed.
This tells you that the Ali administration got caught off guard and was totally unaware of what was going on, oh yeah! like that is believable. They were aware but was hoping that this day would not come.
What is evident is that the US doesn’t trust Guyanese Authorities including law enforcement officials that should have know what was going on.
Why is the Minister of Finance requesting information on such matters, does he have the powers and capabilities to investigate such matters?
Everyone in Guyana knows that this current government and every government in the past is corrupt, what this OFAC notice does is confirm this for the current Ali Administration and he is yet to address it.
The reality is that the US will never reveal what they have on these guys as they run the risk of revealing their source.
And this is a key take away for us to learn from. So when the government is so utterly corrupt and uncaring as has been demonstrated over and over, where there is unfairness and nothing is being done, when our leaders are turning a blind eye to the plight of ordinary Guyanese and only concerned with their friends, associates, families, etc. those who have information should send it to someone that can and will do something with it.
OFAC has done something and we should be encouraged that someone out there cares, so now all Guyanese that have access to information should stop wasting their time on social media, stop quitting because you can’t bear to see the corruption in government and gather that information and send it to someone who can and will do something with it.
I feel the winds of change are blowing.
M. Perry
