Through observing and assessing the current political situation in Guyana, marked by soaring inflation, widespread poverty, and a disillusioned populace, it becomes evident that a substantial portion of Guyanese citizens harbour dissatisfaction with both governments who have led the country since after independence. The pressing need for a viable third-party alternative is unmistakable, though his violent demise abruptly dashed the hopeful prospects presented by figures like Dr. Walter Rodney. While the Alliance For Change (AFC) initially showed promise, its alliance with the People’s National Congress (PNC) and subsequent endorsement of questionable practices, including clinging to power even after a no-confidence motion and the disputed outcome of the March 2020 elections, has eroded the Guyanese people’s trust and support in them.
Over recent years, my attention has been drawn to two prominent businessmen, Mr. Glenn Lall and Mr. Azruddin Mohamed. Their rising prominence both within Guyana and its diaspora is noteworthy. Mr. Glenn Lall’s relentless advocacy for rectifying the ExxonMobil agreement and Mr. Azruddin Mohamed’s commendable philanthropic contributions have garnered significant attention.
Both individuals, possessing considerable wealth and exhibiting a spirit of generosity, are viewed as potential guardians of Guyana’s interests. In a nation plagued by corruption and an unfavourable future, this will unfortunately continue with the two known governments who have led the country for the past 57 years.
This cycle lies in an excessive hierarchical political tradition that demands undeserved loyalty. They deceived the populace into believing that allegiance to only these two parties was synonymous with patriotism and genuine love for the nation. Unsurprisingly, there is hostility towards new and upcoming parties even though they might have the nation’s best interests at heart. Thus, it is imperative for a government capable of ensuring security and eradicating corruption, as well as one that is caring, listens to the cries of its people, and addresses them promptly and fairly.
I believe that Mr. Mohamed and Mr. Lall are immensely popular among Guyanese people, especially the youth of Guyana. The youth are essential drivers of change, harbouring a fervent desire for progress and a departure from the status quo. While the two leading parties of Guyana are engrossed in petty disputes over who performed better, the harsh reality remains that both parties have failed to adequately address the needs of the Guyanese people, leaving the nation significantly underdeveloped and trailing behind by at least two decades. Despite Guyana’s abundant natural resources, including bauxite, gold, and oil, the constant bickering and power struggles between the PPP and the PNC have hindered progress and stifled growth. It’s time to break free from this destructive cycle and embrace a new era of leadership that prioritises collaboration, innovation, and inclusive development for the prosperity of Guyana and its people.
This is precisely what the youth envisions as they become increasingly disenchanted with the perpetual strife between these parties; they no longer harbour interest in supporting either party. Instead, they yearn for a fresh approach, one untainted by the divisive politics of the past. Mr. Mohamed and Mr. Lall embody this desire for change, offering a vision of leadership characterised by integrity, innovation, and genuine concern for the nation’s welfare. Their appeal to the youth transcends traditional party lines, resonating deeply with a generation eager to chart a new course for Guyana’s future. I urge these two gentlemen to take up the challenge and stop Guyana from bleeding.
The popularity of Mr. Mohamed and Mr. Lall transcends geographical and social boundaries, resonating strongly across Guyana’s ten administrative regions and within the diaspora. Their appeal spans diverse ethnic, religious, and socio-economic demographics, earning widespread admiration seldom witnessed since the era of Dr. Rodney. The diaspora’s fervent support for Mr. Mohamed underscores his broad appeal and potential to effect positive change.
To Mr. Mohamed, I heartily appeal that you heed this call and embrace the challenge of halting Guyana’s decline. The nation stands poised to rally behind you in this endeavour.
Yours truly,
Ayesha Khan
