Kaieteur News – A Community Enhancement Programme (CEP) worker on Saturday reportedly drowned while cleaning a trench alongside his colleagues at Golden Fleece, Essequibo Coast, Region Two.
Dead is Lakeram Bishnue, a father of two and a resident of Perseverance, Essequibo Coast.
Bishnue reportedly drowned close to midday.
Kaieteur News understands that Bishnue and his co-workers were reportedly cleaning a trench alongside a dam in the Golden Fleece Backlands when he disappeared underwater.
When he failed to resurface, his co-workers dived under to find him. They reportedly spent more than half an hour diving down into the murky waters before he was found.
A motionless Bishnue was pulled from the waters and taken to hospital where he was officially pronounced dead by doctors.
Eyewitnesses called it a freakish incident because Bishnu cleaned trenches before and knows how to swim.
Some are speculating that he may have caught a “fit” or he was shocked by an electric eel.
